Outstanding in the progress of highway transportation in recent years is the uplifting of safety standards. Highway fatalities during the first half of 1939 were about a fifth less than they were a few years ago. At that rate, more than lives are being saved annually because of these improved safety condi tions, and the outlook is that continued progress in that direction will be made in the future.

Better motor vehicles and better roads, plus a driving public which is becoming educated to the simple rules of safety, are making highway transportation safer. To day it is safer to ride a mile in an automobile than ever before, despite the great increase in highway traffic.
