Retenu a Lyon par la nécessité de pourvoir à la sûreté de sa couronne contre la conspiration découverte du connétable de Bourbon, et a la défense de son pays contre l'agression combinée des Anglais, des Flamands, des Allemands et des Espagnols, il ne rappela néanmoins aucune des troupes qui avaient passé les Alpes. 11 les laissa toutes sous le commandement de l'amiral Bonnivet, qui, de concert avec le maré chal Anne de Montmorency, fut chargé de reprendre le duché de Milan. Dans sa passion ambitieuse, François 1er semblait tenir beau coup plus a s'emparer de la Lombardie qu'à préserver la France.
