The triumph of the doctrine of Evolution has owed much in the past to the study of the structure and development of the Vertebrates, and the correct interpretation of their morphology still plays an important part in the elucidation of the evolutionary process. No other group of animals presents us with so complete a record of the divergent phylo genetic lines along which they have evolved. Although this book is written mainly from the morphological point of view, function has not been lost sight of. For it must not be forgotten that structure and function go hand in hand and evolve parz' passu.
