The dependence of H on Ax is readily shown. In one experiment, for example, an aluminum foil of mm thickness melted for current densities and voltages which did not affect a p foil of the same metal. This defiendence, however, holds also only within narrow limits. If the aluminum was still further increased in thickness (to 1 mm), it did not melt, due undoubtedly to the increased condue tion (negligible for very thin foils) away from the focal spot to parts of the foil not struck by cathode rays.
