This book of collected essays argues that by the late 18th century, the law of larceny had become increasingly insufficient to address the rise of new forms of property such as stocks and bonds, as well as the evolving nature of commercial transactions. The author traces the legislative response to this problem, focusing on two key statutes: the 2 Geo. 2. c. 26. and the 15 Geo. 2. c. 13. The former extended the definition of larceny to include certain types of intangible property, while the latter created a new felony offense for the embezzlement of property by servants of the Bank of England. These statutes, the author argues, were not simply technical adjustments to the law, but reflected a broader shift in the understanding of property and crime in the 18th century.
