Excerpt from Notes From the Journal of F. M. Flad, One of Bishop Gobat's Pilgrim Missionaries in Abyssinia: Edited, With a Brief Sketch of the Abyssinian Church
A brief sketch of a portion of that history found in the following pages.
AT the commencement of the fourth century, Mero pius, a merchant, or, as some say, a philosopher of Tyre, touching on the western coast of the Red Sea, as he was journeying to India, was murdered by the bar barous natives, who, however, spared the lives of two youths, his companions, Adesius and Frumentius, and carried them to the court of the Emperor of Abyssinia. Their talents soon brought them into notice. The latter received employment as a secretary, the former was employed in the buttery.

Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book provides an account of an 1860s mission to Abyssinia whose purpose was to encourage Christian reform in an ancient African church. Serving as both a diary and memoir, the book contains lively descriptions of early missionary life and the surrounding Abyssinian culture. It also contains reflections on the history of the Ethiopian church and its relationship to the Coptic church, and the obstacles encountered by the missionaries, including their mistaken assumption that the Amharic language translation of the Bible would be more widely read and preferred over the traditional Ge'ez language version. The book's straightforward style and poignant account of the challenges faced by the missionaries in their efforts to reach the Abyssinian people with their message of Christian reform gives readers a firsthand glimpse into the early days of a fascinating historical movement.
