Excerpt from Sixteenth Annual Program for Patriotic Exercises in Schools on Grand Army Flag Day, February Twelfth, 1917: In Honor of the National Flag, the Grand Army of the Republic, the Birthday of Abraham Lincoln
You keep Rhode Island Flag Day on the birthday of Abraham Lincoln, that you may learn to love the things he loved and grow to be like him in kindness and fairness, in patience and courage, in devotion to the Union and faith in popular government. You keep the day as Grand Army Flag Day, not only to pay merited honor to the men who fought to preserve our national union and honor, but also to remind you that you are to take their places as civic guards of your country's integrity in times of peace, or as patriot soldiers protecting her honor in the defense of right, liberty, and humanity, even as the Flag may call.
Every school day is a flag day. It is a mandate of law in Rhode Island that the national flag float daily above the school. This means that you are to do your school tasks in the presence of the flag and a consciousness of country, that the citizenship of the school is that of country, and that you belong to your country, as you belong to your school or home. The public school is for the public welfare. Public education is preparation for citizenship.

Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. Written in 1917, this book gives an overview of annual patriotic exercises held in Rhode Island schools as part of a statewide initiative that encouraged public institutions to fly the national flag each school day. To that end, the author, then-Commissioner of Public Schools Walter E. Ranger, discusses the historical significance of certain national holidays, such as Lincoln's birthday and Grand Army Flag Day, against the backdrop of the Great War then raging overseas. The book offers a comprehensive civics lesson for Rhode Island youth on the duties and responsibilities of citizenship in the American republic, emphasizing the principles of service, sacrifice, and democratic ideals. Ultimately, it argues that public education and civic engagement are fundamental to the strength of the nation and the preservation of its shared values.
