Excerpt from Relics of Genius: Visit to the Last Homes of Poets, Painters, and Players With Biographical Sketches
However simple the memorial raised above the poet, it will attract more grateful attention than the costlier tomb by which it may be surrounded. Though the pedigree Of the minstrel have no historic charm, the cold curiosity excited by the rich mausoleum will give place to warm and genial feeling at the shrine of the bard, whose stores of wisdom, clothed with the richness of language, were bequeathed to us as an inheritance; and we linger around his tomb as though it were that of one we had known and loved. The grave may long since have closed upon his lineaments, but his voice is still heard, and the intercourse between him and posterity will be ever new.
