Excerpt from Letters of Prosper Mérimée to Panizzi, Vol. 2
The Times a day or two ago published a some what cowardly article about Canada. I think the English Cabinet has arrived at the point reached by Louis Philippe at the end of his reign - that of boasting of his cowardice, and setting it up as virtue. It has made a great mistake, in my Opinion; it never does to abase ourselves to too great an extent, for fear other people should take us at our word.
