J'ai devant les yeux l'exemple de ce grand chercheur, qui vient de mourir et que j'ai dû remplacer ici aujourd'hui. Sans aucun doute, ce n'est pas un des moindres mérites de Hermann von Helmholtz de s'être efforcé, dès le début de sa carrière, de présenter les problèmes et les résultats des recherches scienti fiques, dans tous les domaines qu'il a explorés, dans des leçons populaires, à la portée des savants qui cultivent les autres branches de la Science. Il nous a ainsi fait progresser chacun dans notre propre domaine. S'il semble impossible d'en faire au tantpour les Mathématiques pures, néanmoins, on doit le tenter dans les limites du possible. Et je ne parle pas ainsi en mon nom seul, mais au nom de tous les membres de la Société ma thématique, qui s'est unie depuis quelques années à la Societe des Sciences naturelles et médicales, et qui, si ce n'est en titre, peut en être néanmoins en fait considérée comme la première Section.

L'oeuvre de Bernhard Riemann est la plus belle et la plus grande de l'analyse à notre époque elle a été consacrée par une admiration unanime, elle laissera dans la Science une trace impérissable. Les géomètres contemporains s'inspirent dans leurs travaux de ses conceptions, ils en révèlent chaque jour par leurs découvertes l'importance et la fécondité. L'illustre géomètre a ouvert dans l'analyse comme une ère nouvelle qui porte l'empreinte de son génie. Elle s'ouvre avec un vif éclat par la dissertation inaugurale si célèbre qui porte pour titre Principes fondamenlaux pour la Théorie générale des fonctions d'une grandeur variable complexe. Riemann a été, dans cet ordre de recherches, le continuateur de Cauchy; il l'a dépassé, mais la reconnaissance des analystes associe étroitement à ses travaux ceux du premier élaborateur de la Théorie des fonctions, qui avait ouvert la voie et surmonté des obstacles longtemps infranchissables dont l'histoire de la Science a conservé la trace. Les principes de Riemann sont d'une originalité saisissante; ils donnent, comme instrument à l'analyse, ces surfaces, auxquelles est attaché le nom de l'inventeur, qui sont à la fois une représentation et une force.
