The difciples of our Lord jefus Chrili, bavin made that great confeflion of him, in difiinélion and oppofition unto them who accounted him only as a prophet, thou art Chrill; the Son of the living God,' Matth. Xvi. 14, 15, 16. He doth on the occafion thereof, give out unto them the great charaéter of the church's {liability and continuance, Upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell {hall not prelzail againit it,' ver. 18. He is himfelf the rock upon which his church is built; as God is called the Rock of his people, on the account of his eternal power and immutability, Deut. Xxxii. 4, 18, 31. Pfal. Xviii. 2, and himfelf the fpiritual 'roc'k, stylish gave out fopplies of mercy and afliftance to the people in the wildest, nefs, 1 Cor. X. 4.

The matters her'e treated of are on all hands confelfed to be of the greateli. Moment; fuch as the eternal welfare of the fouls of 'men is immediately and direétly concerned in. This all thofe who believe the facred truths here propofed and explained, do unanimoufly pro fefs and contend for; nor is it denied by thofe by whom they are oppofed. There is no need therefore to give thee'any fpécial renions to evince thy*concernrnent in thefe things, nor the greatnefs of that concealment, thereby to (induce thee'unto their ferions confideration. It were well indeed that thefe great, facred, and myllerious truths, might, without con. Ten'tion or contro'verfies about them,. Be left unto the faith of believers, as propofed in the fcripture, with that explanation of them, which, in the ordinary minifiry and difpen fation of the gofpel, is necefliry ahd required.
