Son aspect d'ensemble le montre déjà avec assez de certitude. D'abord elle ne suppose pas de persécution générale actuellement déclarée; on peut seulement en redouter une, et deviner ce qu'elle sera. Car déjà de nombreux martyrs ont été immolés ailleurs, à Rome (v1, 9-11; cf. Xvn, 6 et xv111, 211) en Asie Mineure même, à Pergame, il y en a eu au moins un, Antipas, qu'une tradition fait évêque de Pergame sous Domitien (11, Pourtant la grande tentation est annoncée comme future (111, Les ennemis les plus actuels sont encore les Juifs, qui forment une synagogue de Satan et sévissent déjà contre les chré tiens, à Smyrne, à Philadelphie. Des erreurs tendent aussi à s'introduire dans les communautés, un antinomianisme, semble-t-il, qui pouvait être une exagéra tion des principes pauliniens de liberté, et que favorisait une tendance syncrétiste. Ce caractère qu'a le péril actuel d'être surtout intérieur, ou, pour l'extérieur, de provenir principalement des Juifs, montre qu'il pouvait encore exister en asie une certaine tranquillité de surface. Quand l'auteur s'adresse à Laodicee, il ne fait aucune mention du fameux tremblement de terre qui avait tant éprouvé cette ville en l'an 62; c'est que la catastrophe était déjà assez ancienne sans doute, pour être oubliée. Enfin le livre suppose, dans l'imagination populaire, une grande crainte des Parthes, et, comme nous le verrons, une appréhension du retour de Néron, qu'on ne se décidait pas à croire mort. Tous ces traits concor dent bien pour désigner le temps écoulé entre la fin de cet empereur et les persé outions générales du 11e siècle, c'est-à-dire l'époque de la dynastie flavienne, comme d'ailleurs la tradition l'affirme.
C'est donc lorsque l'approche d'une tempête effroyable pesait déjà sur les consciences quand de sinistres pressentiments pouvaient abattre le courage des jeunes Eglises, qui ne voyaient pas le Christ venir à leur secours, et laissaient, de ci de là, leur force de résistance s'affaiblir par leur faute, c'est alors qu'un prophète nommé jean nous verrons plus tard si c'est Jean, fils de Zébédée fit retentir sa prophétie, son Apocalypse, comme le son des trom pettes qui devait appeler le salut des profondeurs de l'autre Monde, en marquant la ruine du siècle présent, plein d'iniquités et de douleurs.
