En effet, la condi tion sociale, les coutumes des peuples encore sauva ges rappellent, sous bien des rapports, quoique non pas absolument, celles de nos propres ancêtres, à une époque fort éloignée elles expliquent, dans nos sociétés modernes, bien des coutumes qui n'ont évidem ment aucun rapport avec notre état social actuel; quelques idées même, empreintes pour ainsi dire dans nos esprits, comme les fossiles sont empreints dans le roc; nous pouvons enfin, par la comparaison, soulever quelque peu le voile épais qui sépare le pré sent de l'avenir.
