In all the tremendous mills now owned by the American Steel \vire Company - one of the big brothers in the United States Steel Corporation family - mil lions oi tons of steel plates and rods are daily given a bath in sulphuric acid. This acid bath cleans the steel of grease and other impurities before the rods are drawn out into wire and the plates are covered with a deposit of tin. At the same time, it removes the iron oxide or rust from the surface of the metal.
