Lorsque, le l4 novembre 1881, Gambetta annonça les noms de ses collaborateurs, il y eut de l'étonnement, et, si l'on expliquait, à. Grand renfort de raisons de personnes et de politique, que les premiers rôles du parti républicain n'eussent pu être englobés dans la combinaison, bien des gens, de bonne ou de mauvaise foi, n'al laient pas jusqu'à. Comprendre les choix du grand orateur. On ne pouvait contester aux nouveaux ministres quelque talent de parole ou quelque science technique, mais quelle autorité pouvaient-ils espérer sur le Parlement qui les connaissait peu, ou les mecon naissait sciemment. Certes, Gambetta, passé maître en la décou verte des hommes, faiblissait et avait failli a l'une de ses réputa tions les mieux assises. Il y eut bien d'autres suppositions faites, qui semblent aujourd'hui indignes d'être consignées, et qui doivent faire monterle rouge au front deleurs charitables auteurs, s'ils s'en souviennent.
Au nombre des nouveaux ministres, était un j eune depute,m. Nval deck-rousseau, entré depuis 'dix-huit mois a peine a, la Cham bre, et on lui avait confié l'un des ministères les plus importants.
