But even that by-product was, and remains, so over powering that it wreaks greater emotions upon the reader than the full central thrust of many a more obvious yarn that now marches to organized cheering from anthology to anthology. Misread Crane's implicit purpose how one may, The Monster does not leave you where you were. It does things to you. And when you take the tale as Crane meant it, construing it as before all a piece of social irony, a sort of miniature Late Victorian anticipation of main street; when you make it look forward instead of back, connecting it more with Mrs. Wharton and Mr. Tarkington than with Poe and Fitz-7ames o'brien then it does even more devastating things to you.
