Excerpt from Victor, or Paris Troubles and Provence Roses

It had been indeed a struggle for Philippe to give up his child into his sister's hands. He had wavered long between her and an old uncle in Paris, who had asked for Victor and who he knew would be kind to him. The question was between one with a defective faith and one whom he had reason to believe was without any. He decided on the former, the more readily that he knew Victor would be far more likely to be thrown into the company of Protestants and Christian people in Geneva than in Paris.

When all was over Justine was glad to take charge of her nephew, though, owing to his long illness and other causes, Philippe left but a small portion for him.
