Sinopsis

Discover the life of Clara A. Swain, M.D., the first medical missionary to the women of the Orient.

This biography traces her calling, training, and decades of trailblazing work in India, where she combined medical care with Christian service.

Clara Swain grew from a diligent student and compassionate nurse into a physician determined to bring health and education to women in need. She and her companion sailed to India in 1869–1870, where she began medical work in Bareilly among orphans, homes, and a growing class of Christian girls training to practice medicine. Her efforts culminated in the founding of a women’s hospital and a dispensary, funded in part by a local ruler, and the training of graduates who earned certificates to practice.
Across years of travel and service, she cared for patients in city and village, advised on women’s health, and helped establish educational opportunities for girls. Her work also led to later appointments, including service as physician to a native princess and continued mission work in challenging environments.
  • A pioneer effort to provide medical care specifically for women in 19th-century India
  • The creation of Bareilly’s first women’s hospital and a functioning dispensary
  • A training program that prepared women to become practicing medical nurses and doctors
  • Joyful perseverance in teaching, nursing, and Christian outreach amid social and cultural hurdles
Ideal for readers seeking an engaging, true account of faith-driven medical mission and historical women’s health reform.
