Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the fascinating world of St. Johnland, a unique 19th-century Christian community established in rural Long Island, New York. It was conceived as a haven for the working poor, offering an escape from the squalor and moral decay of New York City slums. Through a series of letters, the author paints a vivid picture of this utopian settlement, where residents exchanged cramped city dwellings for comfortable cottages and found steady employment through various industries. The author explores the community's core values of faith, industry, and self-sufficiency, highlighting its innovative approach to social welfare. St. Johnland's emphasis on education, moral guidance, and community support created an environment where individuals and families could thrive. The book also delves into the challenges faced by the community, including issues of governance, individual accountability, and the potential pitfalls of growth. This insightful account of St. Johnland offers a window into a bygone era of social experimentation and religious influence. By examining the successes and struggles of this pioneering community, the book provides valuable lessons on the enduring power of faith, compassion, and community in addressing social inequality and fostering human dignity.
