He nodded and led the way down a flight of steps to the beach and they dropped in the sand under neath a pier. Without his grotesque make-up, he showed for a clean-shaven man of the late forties, with the grave lines which in the general irony of things tend to sadden the face of the jester. Side by side with him, one readily saw where the girl got her blue-gray eyes. And hers, too, were whimsical.
