Le point de départ de mon travail se trouve dans l'examen de ques tions toutes différentes relatives aux séries trigonométriques, questions qui ont été un peu négligées depuis la publication du Mémoire de Dirichlet. Avant lui, on avait essayé de démontrer la légitimité des développements trigonométriques, en se rendant compte de l'ordre de grandeur des termes de la série. Cette évaluation n'est. Pas suffisante, comme Dirichlet le fait remarquer; car il fallait démontrer non-seule ment que Ia série est convergente, mais encore en déterminer la somme, ce qui présentait des difficultés sérieuses, levées pour la première fois et d'une manière complète par l'illustre géomètre.
