Perse n'avait rien publié. Tout au plus avait-il lu, devant un cercle, sans doute restreint, d'auditeurs, une partie de son oeuvre satirique, qui avait arraché à Lucain des cris d'admiration. Il laissait des vers de jeu nesse, composés au sortir de l'enfance et que sa mère supprima sur le conseil de Cornutus une tragédie prétexte, un livre dont les manuscrits de la Vita Persi ont altéré le titre au point de le rendre méconnaissable, une courte pièce sur l'héroïsme de la première Arria, belle-mère de Thrasea. Mais, après ces premiers essais, la lecture de Lucilius l'avait bientôt porté à composer des satires dont le recueil restait inachevé car le poète écrivait peu et lentement. Cornutus fit quelques retouches légères et, en particulier, supprima quelques vers â la fin de la sixième et dernière satire pour lui donner l'apparence d'être terminée. Mais, sur la demande de Caesius Bassus, il s'en remit à ce dernier du soin d'éditer l'ouvrage, dont le succès fut tout de suite très grand.
