IT was hoped that'tlfis abridgement of Dean Payne Smith's Thesaurus Syriacus would have appeared together with or earlier than the last part of that work. I deeply regret the long delay, due chiefly to my father's death in 1895, and to the consequent necessity of laying aside my own papers, in order to labour, in conjunction with D. S. Margoliouth, at the completion of the greater work.
