Excerpt from An Act to Incorporate the City of Chicago: Passed March 4, 1837
Ele°fi°n~ sect. 5. An election shall be held in each of the wards of said city, on the first Tuesday 1n March in each year, after the year eighteen hundred and thirty' seven, at such place as the common council of said city may appoint, and of which six days previous public notice shall be given in writing. In three public places in each ward by the inspectors thereof.

Excerpt from An Act to Incorporate the City of Chicago: Passed March 4, 1837
Firstelech'on. Sect. 6. At the first election under this act, and at each annual elec tion thereafter, there shall be elected two Aldermen and one Assessor from each ward, each of whom shall be an actual resident of the ward in which he was elected, Provided however, That the aforesaid wards, denominated the third and fifth wards, shall be entitled to elect but one Alderman from each ward, until the annual election for the year anno domini 1839.
