The states of Alabama, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, and the territories of Alaska, Arizona, Dakota, and the District of Columbia form the group given in this bulletin, being the first of a series on the insurance business in the United States. The statistics given are for ten years, and show the fire, ocean marine, and inland navigation and transportation insurance business transacted from january r, 1880, to December 31, 1889, with the exception of the business of a few companies retired during the early years of the decade, the aggregate business of which would not be of sufficient amount to change the general results.

The comparatively recent beginning of the insurance business in Alaska allows but a small experience for the companies in that territory, the business up to December _31, 1889, being confined exclusively to insurance against losses by fire.
