IN preparing this compend the practical needs of the student have been considered, controversial matter and references to authors and articles have therefore been omitted, and the ch'ort to simplify the subject steadily maintained. The chief text-books in English, French and German have been consulted, as well as many monographs and special articles, and it is believed that nothing included will be found at variance with the text-books used in American medical colleges.

Chapter VI. Is based almost wholly upon a syllabus prepared by Prof. Jas. Ewing, of Cornell Medical College, for one of his classes, and my thanks are due him for permission to use it. I am indebted also to Dr. J. C. Johnston, of the same institution, for valuable hints and for the photographs which illustrate the chapter on neoplasms. The negatives for these and for Figs. 58, 77 and 78 were made by Dr. B. H. Buxton, of Cornell, and kindly loaned by him.
