Quand on touche à l'histoire de la Révolution, ce qui frappe d'abord, ce qui aggrave la diffi culté d'en éclairer les profondeurs et les obscu rités, c'est la diversité des épisodes qui la cons tituent, la multitude des personnages qu'elle met en scène, le nombre des théâtres sur les quels, pendant tant d'années, ont évolué les acteurs de ces temps tragiques et se sont déroulés les événements auxquels ils'furent mêlés.
