Two women, two cultures, 1000 years of separation.
Anike Hendricks is devastated by the alienation of her adult son Russel, driving her, and her husband Daniel, to escape their pain by seeking a new life in north western Ontario. Their lives are turned upside down when Russel unexpectedly shows up, after a 5 year absence, with his young daughter, a child neither Anike or Daniel knew existed. They are compelled to take the child in and, every summer over the following years, the bonds between grandchild and grandparents grow.
In a parallel story, Giizis-Kwe, an Anishinaabeg woman living in pre-contact Ontario in the first millennium, is unexpectedly required to raise her infant granddaughter when the child's mother dies.
The two stories are entwined, highlighting the differences, and surprising similarities, between the two women as they guide their granddaughters through the experiences they share of life, death, heartache, happiness and the coming of age in two very different times.
And woven throughout the story is the presence of the Moon Rabbit, who appears in obvious, and not-so-obvious, form to each of these people at significant times during their lives. Is it a ghost from the past, a harbinger of things to come, or simply a small animal with a curiosity about humans?
