In her first collection in five years, Anne Carson contemplates 'decreation' - an activity described by Simone Weil as 'undoing the creature in us' - an undoing of self. But how can we undo self without moving through self, to the very inside of its definition? Where else can we start?
Anne Carson's Decreation starts with form - the undoing of form. Form is various here: opera libretto, screenplay, poem, oratorio, essay, list, montage. The undoing is tender, but tenderness can change everything, or so the author appears to believe.
By turns exhilarating and bewildering, lucid and hermetic, Anne Carson is a maverick with a thrilling range of skills. As Charles Simic says, 'Carson takes risks, subverts literary conventions, and plays havoc with our expectations. She is a wonder: an unconventional, often difficult poet who has a huge following among today's readers of poetry and whose work has been honoured with our most prestigious literary awards.'

Paperback. Condición: Fine. Decreation (2007) ? Anne Carson Jonathan Cape ? ISBN: 9780224079266 ? Condition: Good Rehomed with baffled admiration by Crappy Old Books So you want a book that?s: Poetry, Essay, Opera libretto, Theology-adjacent, And also sort of about Simone Weil, Sappho, and Euripides ?all at once? Congratulations. You?ve found Decreation , where Anne Carson politely ignores the boundaries of genre, form, and your attention span, and just writes whatever her brain is doing at a very high level. This 2007 Jonathan Cape edition is what you buy when you?ve outgrown ?inspirational quotes? and moved on to ?carefully structured intellectual confusion.? It?s smart. It?s strange. It?s beautiful. It may also leave you staring at the wall thinking, ?I understand absolutely nothing and yet somehow feel upgraded.? Condition: Good (the Crappy Old Books version) When we say Good , we mean: The cover is intact and not currently peeling off in existential despair The spine may show light creasing, a sign that somebody once attempted to understand Anne Carson and lived to nearly tell the tale All pages present, un-chewed, un-baptised in coffee or wine Some gentle shelfwear and perhaps the faint psychic echo of one (1) overwhelmed literature student No fluorescent stickers, no ?GIFT EDITION? nonsense, no underlining in red biro from someone who ?did post-structuralism at uni.? What?s inside (approximately) Calling this ?a poetry collection? is like calling a cathedral ?quite a shed.? Inside Decreation you?ll find: Poems that refuse to behave like poems Essays that drift into myth and back out through philosophy An opera of sorts, because why not Women thinking themselves out of existence and into something stranger The kind of lines you have to read three times before giving up and just enjoying the sound of them If you like your reading experience straightforward, linear, and fully comprehensible: this is not for you. If you enjoy being gloriously out of your depth while someone brilliant talks, this will be weirdly comforting. Why this edition? Because Jonathan Cape does that classy thing where books look like they belong on the shelves of people who own more than one type of bookmark. You get: Nice paper that doesn?t feel like a takeaway menu Layout that won?t give you a migraine (the content might, but that?s not typography?s fault) The reassuring aura of Serious Literature?, as if the book might at any moment win another prize just by existing And since you?re getting it from Crappy Old Books , you also get: A previously loved copy, mildly softened by real human hands A price that doesn?t require a research grant The quiet satisfaction of knowing your metaphysical crisis is second-hand and thus sustainably sourced Ideal for readers who: Like their theology with a side of Greek myth and structural experimentation Think genres are more like suggestions than rules Have a soft spot for brainy weirdness and sentences that could double as riddles Want something to read on public transport that whispers, ?Do not talk to me. I am busy unmaking myself.? Technical but necessary bit Title: Decreation Author: Anne Carson Publisher: Jonathan Cape (2007) ISBN: 9780224079266 Condition: Good ? gently used, intellectually dangerous Decreation : for when you?re tired of ?personal growth? and instead fancy ?personal dismantling, with footnotes.?
