This book offers a unique combination of succinctly expressed basic concepts of cell growth and cell death, particularly by apoptosis, and detailed instructions and protocols on how accurately to measure these processes. Experts in each line of these investigations describe a range of techniques which will enable weve an inexperienced reader to determine with precision such cellular events as the cell cycle traverse, chromosomal abnormalities detected at cell division, DNA damage that causes these abberrations, and cell death, or cell senescence. Establishment of the cell lines for studies is illustrated with reference to leukaemic cells, and optimization of cell proliferation by growth factors is also described. Together, these contributions form a useful laboratory manual for studies of growth abnormalities in human cell.
