Understanding neurobiological systems requires the application of methods from many different areas. This work brings together a large number of techniques which are useful in exploring the functions of molecules, and the resolution of neurobiological processes at the cellular level. Chapters cover techniques from basic "in vitro" maintenance of cells, through preparation, perfusion and recording methods, to more advanced topics, such as the study of ionic activity by optical imaging, and the mathematical modelling of excitable membranes. Contributions have been assembled from experts in the field, and the techniques covered will appeal to both new and established researchers. Each chapter gives information on basic methods and direct practical assistance in designing and undertaking new experiments.
