It explains how the structures and agents typifying the Third World came into being, by locating the origins of developing countries in the context of the rise of capitalism and certain aspects of colonialism and post-colonialism. One section places the Third World in the context of the global economy of the 1990s and examines different aspects of how the contemporary Third World works, introducing key conceptual tools.
