This is designed as a full and readable account of the making of a dictionary. Both a general introduction to lexicography and a systematic guide to lexicographical methods, it traces a dictionary from its planning through to completion. Demonstrating how mono- and bilingual dictionaries are compiled, the book includes sections on dealing with pronunciation, inflexion, constructions, collocations, and idioms, the structure of entries and their arrangement in a dictionary, and the ways in which computers have revolutionized lexicography.
