This text describes how design can be put into practice and what starting knowledge is needed. It also accounts for the thought and decision processes that a designer has to go through when making an object. The main examples taken are mechanical machines, but the principles apply equally in electrical, civil or other branches of engineering. This book is intended for students (probably final year or graduate) on design courses in engineering departments (mechanical and civil especially) and designers in industry.
