The characteristic properties of functional groups and the methods for interconverting them are the foundations of organic chemistry. Approaches to new compounds may involve many stages in which a precursor's functional group must be transformed. To effect such changes efficiently is the hallmark of a successful synthesis. This primer selects widely used reactions which are the basis of organic chemistry, and presents them in a systematic framework to give a broad understanding of their mechanistic features. Subjects are presented concisely and systematically, including many schemes and diagrams.
