An up-to-date account of the development of the North Sea Rift system and its associated sedimentary basins is given in this volume, which presents contributions by leading research workers. Discrepancies in the existing methods for estimating crustal stretching are addressed and solutions are put forward with new models of basin development. The tectonic and paleogeographical development of the North Sea Rift system is reviewed, and accounts are given of its crustal structure, using evidence from deep seismic profiling. The proposed crustal models combine gravity and seismic data, rift-related magmatism, linked fault structures, and architectural styles. A comprehensive gravity map and a review of the hydrocarbon potential of the North Sea basin are also included.

It elucidates the processes of continental rifting, basin evolution, and crustal deformation, offering insights into the implications for petroleum exploration and natural resource management. The authors provide detailed geological studies, including seismic data and stratigraphic analyses, to illustrate the evolution of the rift basins. The book is an essential reference for geologists, geophysicists, and anyone interested in the Earth's subsurface dynamics, discussing the implications of these tectonic processes on petroleum systems and resources in the region. -- Contents: 1 Tectonic and Palaeogeographic Development of the North Sea Rift System 2 Lithospheric Structure of the North Sea From Deep Seismic Reflection Profiling 3 North Sea Gravity Map 4 Gravity Modelling in the Viking Graben Area 5 Gravity and Deep Seismic Reflection Profiles Across the North Sea Rifts 6 Rift-Related Magmatism in the North Sea Basin 7 Linked Fault Tectonics of the North Sea 8 Architectural Styles of Basin Fill in the Northern Viking Graben 9 A Kinematic Model for the Orthogonal Opening of the Late Jurassic North Sea Rift System, Denmark - Mid Norway 10 Structural Evolution of the Ringkobing-Fyn High 11 Does the Uniform Stretching Model Work in the North Sea? 12 Application of a Flexural Cantilever Simple-Shear/Pure Shear Model of Continental Lithosphere Extension to the Formation of the Northern North Sea Basin 13 Hydrocarbon Plays and Rifting in the Northern North Sea; Index.
