A classic of materials science, this book describes the three classes of strong materials based on metals, ceramics, and fibrous composites and compares them with the highest conceivable strengths in terms of our knowledge of the binding forces between atoms. The authors discuss the properties of imperfections which detract from this strength and show how the properties of the three strong materials arise. This new third edition is revised, updated, and expanded, with a new chapter on strong glasses and ceramics.
