The Spiritual Logic of Ramon Lull - Tapa dura

Johnston, Mark D.

9780198249207: The Spiritual Logic of Ramon Lull

Sinopsis

This book is a comprehensive, critical survey of all the logical doctrines of the well-known, but little-understood Catalan philosopher and theologian Ramon Lull. The highly idiosyncratic character of his writings has long frustrated the efforts of general medieval historians to define his contribution to later Scholastic culture, and resisted attempts by specialists to explain exactly how his methods and procedures worked. This new study, the first book-length treatment in English of Lull's philosophy for over 50 years attempts to resolve both of these difficulties. The author argues that Lull's peculiar logical doctrines, like his entire project for a so-called "General and Universal Art of Knowledge", result from his reinterpretation of the use of commonplace scholastic teachings according to his own preferred ethical and spiritual ideals. The product is a "spiritual logic" that effectively serves Lull's great goal of tracing all knowledge back to its source in the one truth, God.
