9780198237532: Subjective, Intersubjective, Objective (The Philosophical Essays of Donald Davidson (5 Volumes))

This is the long-awaited third volume of philosophical writings by Davidson, whose influence on philosophy since the 1960s has been deep and broad. His first two collections, published by Oxford in the early 1980s, are recognized as contemporary classics. His ideas have continued to flow; now, in this new work, he presents a selection of his best work on knowledge, mind, and language from the last two decades. It is a rich and rewarding feast for anyone interested in philosophy, and essential reading for anyone working on these topics.

Review:

`Davidson writes philosophy like Wagner wrote operas: nothing less than everything is ever at stake.'
Jerry Fodor, London Review of Books

`A lot of the fun of reading these papers is seeing how an exiguous collection of commitments plays out in so many different domains.'
Jerry Fodor, London Review of Books

`These bite-sized essays, each a mere fifteen or twenty pages long, often impress one as serious philosophical achievements even when they are read piecemeal, as they were written. But when they're read together, one sees that Davidson is a kind of bird that's become rare almost to
extinction: a systematic philosopher.'
Jerry Fodor, London Review of Books

Review from previous edition `...these intriguing views are ingeniously argued and fruitfully provocative.'
Philosophy.

`Review from other book by this author 'There is no more creative or systematic philosopher at work in America today than Donald Davidson... Davidson has already constructed one of the most remarkable pillars of sustained philosophical reasoning to be found in any era.''
Ian Hacking, New York Review of Books
