A coherent theory of rural organization is essential in designing effective development policies in rural and developing areas. This study communicates the main elements and themes of this theory and broadens the base of empirical knowledge on which the theory is based. Combining recent theoretical work, case studies and historical research, the editors explore the areas where governments of developing countries have most widely intervened: rural credit markets; rural land markets; agricultural taxation and transfers; and technological change in agriculture.
