This book provides a comprehensive analysis of China's booming rural non-state (collective and private) industrial sector. The main topics covered in the nineteen papers include the performance, efficiency, ownership, and institutional structures, employment and wage systems, and regional structure of China's rural industrial sector. The papers are based on a collaborative research project between Chinese and World Bank researchers in which detailed information at the national and provincial level and for four representative countries, 63 townships, 122 rural industrial firms, and 1,174 workers was collected and processed.
