"AIDS in the World", published by Harvard University Press in 1992, was the first full analysis of the global confrontation with this disease, Since then, the AIDS scene has been changing so rapidly that a second volume is needed to describe new findings. The authors extend the international comparisons from 38 countries to the entire world, show that the AIDS pandemic has become increasingly fragmented within the world population, present data to go beyond the current understanding of the vulnerability of nations and communities to the major spread of HIV, and discuss in depth the social strategies that have enabled individuals to avoid infection. They also place more emphasis on the vulnerabilities of different age and sex groups, such as infants, children and women.
