Eddie Cantor is regarded as America's first entertainment "superstar". His career began in the 1910s and continued to the 1960s, but reached its peak in the 1920s and 1930s - when he became the only entertainer to be in succession the most popular star on Broadway, in film and on radio. In the way Cantor called attention to himself and his family, he was the first star to become not only a performer, but a national symbol.
