A unique eyewitness account, by one of Europe's most informed political observers, of one of Europe's most extraordinary historical moments. In 1989, as one communist regime fell after another, Garton Ash was there to witness the collapse: in Warsaw, on 4 June, when the communist government was humiliated by Solidarity in the first semi-free elections since the Second World War; in Budapest, twelve days later, when Imre Nagy, thirty-one years after his execution, was finally given his proper funeral. He was there in Berlin, as the Wall opened. Most remarkably, he was there in Prague, in the back rooms of the Magic Lantern Theatre, with Vaclav Havel and the Civic Forum as they masterminded their Velvet Revolution.

Acerca del autor
Timothy Garton Ash is a Fellow of St. Antony's College , Oxford. He is the author of THE FILE and HISTORY OF THE PRESENT, as well as his trilogy of the collapse of Soviet rule in Central Europe and its aftermath, THE POLISH REVOLUTION, WE THE PEOPLEand THE USES OF ADVERSITY (reissued simultaneously by Penguin).
