Every Thursday night in certain parts of London, husbands kiss their wives and hurry off to attend the weekly meeting of an exclusive learned society. Nearing headquarters, these men shed their scholarly demeanor as they approach a building with a hard-to-find address, marked by a plaque that reads: METROPOLITAN EGYPTOLOGICAL SOCIETY. Initially, readers may be uncertain about the true nature of the Egyptologists' activities. The members' expertise in camouflage has led to suspicions of espionage, drug-smuggling, and other questionable pursuits, all while maintaining an all-male membership. Why does the Society guard its secrets so fiercely? What is the significance of the safeguards in Article 22 of its Constitution? What occurs behind the locked doors of the Isis Room? The authors present a brilliant masquerade that suggests if even a fraction of the world's lecherous males adopted such clever disguises, learned societies would multiply exponentially. Kingsley Amis, born in 1922, and Robert Conquest, born in 1917, both have distinguished literary careers, with Amis gaining fame from his novel "Lucky Jim" and Conquest contributing to various academic and literary fields, including poetry and Soviet studies.
