Randolph Philipp is Professor of Mathematics Education in the School of Teacher Education at San Diego State University and a member of CRMSE, the Center for Research in Mathematics and Science Education. His research interests include studying the effects of integrating mathematics content and students' mathematical thinking.  Randy started his educational career as a secondary school mathematics teacher in Los Angeles, California, and as a teacher in the Peace Corps in Liberia, West Africa.    Bonnie Schappelle is a Research Associate at San Diego State University's Center for Research in Mathematics and Science Education.  Her research interests include studying the effects of integrating mathematics content and students' mathematical thinking.  She also serves as a professional editor.  Earlier in her career, Bonnie taught secondary school.

Facilitator s Guide for IMAP Searchable Collection of Children s-Mathematical-Thinking Video Clips

 

One of the most powerful experiences teachers have is to observe children making sense of mathematics. But frequently the instruction children receive in the classroom differs greatly from the intuitive mathematical reasoning they bring with them to school. Professional development built around understanding children s thinking empowers teachers to create rich instructional environments that promote mathematical inquiry and understanding, leading to documented improvement in student achievement. Using video clips showing children s thinking in professional development contexts can motivate and promote growth in teachers content knowledge of mathematics and hone their abilities to guide each child s development of foundational knowledge and deep understandings.

 

This Facilitator's Guide has been developed to support your use of the 232 videos contained within the IMAP Searchable Collection for these purposes.  The guide provides philosophy, research support, and context for using the DVD materials, including a suggested sequence for incorporating the video clips into professional development experiences. Additionally, you will find the following sections within the guide:

• A detailed explanation of the functionality and features of the product and tips for using the various search options to refine your results.
