Sinopsis

A follow-up to Uyless Black's best-selling Voice Over IP, this book focuses on critical Internet call processing protocols -- giving professionals all the background they need to successfully implement voice, data, fax, and even videoconferencing across the Internet. In Internet Telephony: Call Processing Protocols, Uyless Black introduces each key IETF and ITU standard for Internet call processing, helping communications professionals resolve conflicts and achieve maximum interoperability. The book begins with a basic tutorial on telephony call processing and the differences between call processing on traditional circuit-switched telephone networks vs. packet-based networks such as the Internet. The book includes extensive coverage of the ITU H.323 standard for transmission of mixed-media signals such as videoconferencing sessions; the IETF/ITU Megaco Protocol for improving device interoperability and acoustic performance; and IETF's Session Initiation Protocol for IP teleconferencing. Black demonstrates how to build special services such as call waiting into IP networks; and an in-depth introduction into telephony traffic routing using the new Telephony Routing over IP (TRTP) protocol.
