Physiological Systems in Insects is an overview of the biological basis for the preeminent role played by insects in global ecology. The indisputable importance of insects in human health and agriculture, as well as their dominant place in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, makes an understanding of insects important not only to entomologists but also to all biologists. Insects serve as excellent models of basic physiology because of the uncanny similarities between the processes in insects and vertebrates. Although insects constitute a very diverse group of animals, the text considers the broad functional aspect of their success without delving into their classification.
