The vast family of volatile organic compounds plays a central role in the chemistry of the Earth's atmosphere. Reactive Hydrocarbons in the Atmosphere provides comprehensive and up-to-date reviews covering all aspects of the behavior, sources, occurrence, and chemistry of these compounds. The book considers both biogenic and anthropogenic sources, plus their effects in the atmosphere at local, regional, and global scales.

Atmospheric chemistry is a growing discipline in response to air pollution and global change issues. It is widely recognizd that reactive hydrocarbons (volatile organic compounds or VOCs) play a central role in the chemistry of the polluted and unpolluted (natural) atmosphere. This text describes the state of knowledge, in the late 1990s, of the emissions, distribution, chemistry and analysis of VOCs in the atmosphere at urban, regional and global scales. By covering compounds of both anthropogenic (mainly from automobiles) and biogenic origins, this text addresses the controversy about the contribution of natural emissions from trees and other vegetation to overall emissions and certain air pollution problems.
