This is the third edition of the Code since Parliament passed the homelessness legislation in 1977. It is wider in scope than previous editions, containing guidance on all aspects of the assessment procedure, Its main purpose is to secure fair, consistent and good practice amongst housing authorities in England and Wales. The Code is set out in three main sections: Chapters 1-3 are a guide to the legislative requirements of the Act; Chapters 4-10 cover the assessment of applications and prevention; Chapters 11-16 explain how an authority should discharge its duties to applicants who are accepted as homeless.
